When it comes to amandaluxe projects, I'm not supposed to pick favorites...but I'm human. With that in mind, the concept of Jumping Colors has been something extremely close to my heart. I planned for the first series to be my final project for amandaluxe before I decided it was time for me to focus on landing creative gigs with emerging designers. Then I realized Jumping Colors was only the beginning; it was the turning point for me as an aspiring artist.
I wanted to keep the idea of celebrating melanin alive and decided to revamp the project. This particular project focuses on poetess, Tayllor Johnson (aka Byakko), and her sisterhood movement, #ImNotYourEnemy. This project was aimed to empower synergy and love among the black female race; staying true to her dream:
"I have a dream, that one day, women of color can pass by each other and not see Imaginary Enemies." - Byakko
Jumping Colors II: #ImNotYourEnemy comprises of five women with three different skin compositions (with three of the women being featured in the original series.) The last project had an Afrocentric aesthetic with contemporary West African printed skirts while this project focused on a Black Bohemian aesthetic with exotic indie chic patterned bottoms.
The coolest part about the day was not only were we having the greatest day ever shooting but so was everyone else around us. Our energy exuded love, friendliness and creative synergy - the exact goal I had for the project. It was beautiful to watch tourists and locals stop to take photographs of us and experience this amazing movement. Everyone was asking Tayllor about her shirt, what it means, and exchanging information so we could receive these amazing images. The most warming part? This White American woman had an adopted Black American daughter and she asked Tayllor to ask if she could be apart of the shoot. Yo. Meet our featured caramel princess, Bite Sized Reese's.
Tayllor [insert slave name], it was such an honor working with you! Thank you, Queen, for agreeing to collaborate and allowing me to bring your vision to life.
